Welcome a new cohort of Global Health-ers

This blog is a way to update your friends when you are doing research or throwing a large bash. I will send out an email so that anybody can post or be the administer. I think that the best people responsible for it is the social committee or anyone who knows where the best happy hours are!

There are continuing global health-ers who are not on the email list but follow this blog so it is a nice way to retain social networks.

Welcome and hope you are doing great!
Best,
Noah

Long Post about researching on my own blog...didn't want to take up a lot space here :)
miss you all, N

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

My project is in full swing and I have been interviewing people in their villages...it has both been tiresome, wonderful, boring, exciting, enlightening.

A normal day involves networking with people in the province town, preparing for interviews. Motorbiking 45 minutes or more through rice fields to meet some villagers. Sometimes the interviews work great other times not so much. I have interviewed around 25-30 people so far but didn't record all of them and not going to use all of them so want to get more indepth deeper interviews.

Health is a different concept here and it is tricky to figure how to ask about it especially when my target audience doesn't think much about it. Also, everyone is in the field planting rice so I have about 2 hrs a day when I can meet with people 5-7pm so I get a lot of riding in twilight. It is super beautiful here and people are being so kind and wonderful. Here are some pics from the last few days:

riding back from interviews

the snake I ate when I was introducing myself to the village leader

my research assistant

the temple from one of the villages

a traditional healer and his buffalo: traditional medicine is still used, often combined with modern treatment

More later,
Hugs, N
PS Kai Your pictures look beautiful I am glad you are having a great time!!!!

HAPPY HOUR after MGMT Friday Apr 24th

So I was thinking we should mesh with some COPHPers and do a combined happy hour. Maybe we could have three tables: one for community dialogue on participatory based research, one table on global health determinants and positive/negative impacts on aid and one table to talk about how sweet the Seattle Sounders are!

Place: Kristos Eastlake
Time: after mgmt to go over our leadership dev't plans 5-6:30 this Friday.

Kristos is a new Greek restaurant and bar less than a block south of the University bridge (ie easy walking/biking
distance from school). The website doesn't say what their happy hourspecials are but this Seattle Weekly article says they have $4 wells, $5wines and a buck off pints, with the entire menu (excluding entrees) at 50% off.

Also, there is a group of us that will be heading to the Seattle Center at 6:30ish to go to the free world music from 7-10 pm after happy hour.

MARATHON: Vancouver May 3rd

Join us for a run!
Or just cheer us on at the 11th mile when we are all feeling pooped....

The Global Health and Friends run teams is heading to Vancouver to represent Public Health!

If anyone wants to come, run, cheer, celebrate or give us massages let us know!

BDAY PARTY NOAH'S: FRIDAY

28 years later...
Join us for a Celebration!
A celebration of what?.....Noah turning almost 30

BDAY party for the awkward age of 29.
Date: April 17th, 2009
Time: 7pm-morning
Where: 7711 17th Ave Ne, Seattle, Wa, 98115

However, it is not all about me...It is also about other April bday-ers such as the Sarahs', my roommates Mom, Eddie Murphy, Peter Frampton and Tony Danza.

It is also a fundraiser for our own Bea to get a new used laptop because there was a horrible accident that involved a new Macbook keypad and peach cider (Social safety nets unite!)

No gifts needed just some company and some bday hugs and love for me, Sarah's and Danza!

7pm - 10pm hanging out and bbqing, good conversation in backyard (weather permitting), 10pm onwards: Dancing til the Morning! Friends are more than welcome.
